Responsible Sourcing
Responsible Sourcing
Subway® proudly serves communities across the globe and is committed to choosing supply chain partners that support high standards for animal and worker welfare and the environment.
Subway® believes that where our ingredients come from and how our animals are bred, raised, transported, and slaughtered are integral to preparing great food for our guests. We take the issue of animal welfare seriously and believe the ethical treatment of animals is an essential component of our commitment to responsible sourcing.
Approach to Responsible Sourcing
Vendor Code of Conduct
Subway requires all suppliers that supply into the Subway system to comply with our Vendor Code of Conduct. Subway’s Vendor Code of Conduct prohibits forced labor/slavery as well as establishing our expectations for employment, workplace practices, compensation and benefits, discrimination, health and safety. We are continuously working towards making the safeguards of our supply chain more robust and ensuring compliance with our standards.
Sustainable Fishing
We recognize the vital importance of sustainable fishing—both commercially and ecologically. Subway sources wild-caught skipjack tuna, certified by the Fisheries Certificate of Origin and a Captain’s Statement to verify traceability. We strive to work with the industry to move to more sustainable practices including sourcing our seafood from independently certified sustainable fisheries, supporting protected areas and maintaining healthy and sustainable fish stocks.
Laying Hens
As of November 1, 2025, ahead of our commitment deadline, all Subway restaurants in the U.S. and Canada source 100 percent cage-free eggs. This multi-year transition fulfills our promise to source 100 percent cage-free eggs for the more than 22,000 restaurants across North America.
In Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand, 100 percent of the eggs we purchase are either free-range or cage-free. In other regions where supply is limited, we are committed to working with the industry and suppliers to find solutions to source cage-free or free-range eggs.

Broiler Chickens
In the U.S. and in line with FDA guidance, our sandwiches, wraps, and salads are served only with chicken raised without antibiotics important to human health.
All Subway suppliers in the U.S. follow the National Chicken Council’s welfare standards, which include science-based recommendations on stocking density, adequate space for the animals to express their natural behaviors, proper feed formulation, professional veterinary attention, and proper handling. Each of our suppliers in the U.S. are third-party audited for compliance by auditors who are certified by the Professional Animal Auditor Certification Program (PAACO), a leading auditor training authority for animal welfare.
We continue to monitor ongoing research and development of science-based welfare indicators as a path forward for improved broiler chicken welfare.

Sows
Subway® recognizes the importance of sow and piglet welfare in our pork supply chain, and supports sow husbandry and housing approaches that create improved animal welfare outcomes. In accordance with local regulations, we have completely phased out gestation crates in our European supply chain. In other regions, we are engaging with suppliers and industry groups to monitor and align with evolving best practices for sow housing while maintaining commercially viable pricing.
